FAQs

Q: Why a greenhouse?

A: Whether you're a serious plant enthusiast or just want a location where your plants will flourish during all four seasons, a Sierra Greenhouse can offer you enjoyment for years to come.

A Sierra Greenhouse provides a controlled climate that plants need, especially exotic types, and the perfect environment for growing.  Seedlings, transplants and a variety of fruits and vegetables all benefit from the protection of a Sierra Greenhouse and will provide you with enjoyment year-round.

In addition, a Sierra Greenhouse adds beauty to your homestead with its simple and elegant design.

Q: Can I grow tomatoes year 'round?

A:
Yes!  However you may need a simple grow light and possibly supplemental heat depending on your location.

Q: What type of flooring is needed?

A:
Concrete, wood, gravel, almost anything will work as long as it is a level and true surface. Always take into consideration how you are going to use your greenhouse. It is also important to consider drainage.

Q: Do I need a heater or cooler?

A:
This depends upon your location and what you are growing.  If you are protecting plants from frost or snow and hungry wildlife, most likely not.  But, if you are growing exotic plants, such as orchids, or unseasonable produce, most likely, yes.  Check with your local nursery for growing conditions.

Q: What about snow load?

A:
If you live in the foothills or even higher, snow is a concern. But it needn't be. We checked with our Lexan Manufacturer and the El Dorado County Building Department. The standard roofing material that we use on your Sierra Greenhouse can withstand 30 lbs per square foot of snow.
And, for an additional charge, the roofing material can be upgraded to 50 lbs. per square foot! According to the Building Department, this is satisfactory for the foothills and higher elevations. A truss or other support can also be built for additional roof support if necessary.

Q: What is a bench and what kind do I need?

A: In greenhouse lingo, a bench is a shelf. You can use this as a work space or to place plants. We offer wood or PVC -coated welded wire benches. The difference between the two is mostly subjective. The wood benches are very attractive and are better suited to display orchids and bonsai. Wire benches are also attractive and tend to be better suited for general purpose gardening. They are very durable adn will "out live" your greenhouse.
